Just a few years ago, Hilla questioned whether she had what it takes to succeed in higher education. Today, she works as an Internal Auditor, developing management systems and responsible for audits across the organization. Her journey to the current role began when she decided to trust her own abilities and take a chance on something new.
DREAM OF WORKING AT A PLANT
Hilla’s career at Valmet Automotive began in 2016 when she joined the Paint Shop as a Paint Shop Process Specialist.
“I applied to Valmet Automotive because I specifically wanted to work in a factory environment. I had no previous manufacturing experience, but I was drawn to the structured way of working, the processes, and the consistency that production operations require.”
After spending some time in the Paint Shop, increasing production volumes created opportunities to move into new roles. Hilla had already become interested in the work of quality inspectors in the Paint Shop, and soon she transitioned into a quality inspection role herself.
As her responsibilities evolved, Hilla discovered how rewarding it was to view operations from different perspectives. At the same time, the idea of pursuing further education began to grow, even though higher education initially felt like a significant step.
“For a long time, I thought I wouldn’t be able to manage subjects such as Swedish. My supervisor at the time encouraged me to apply for studies, and eventually I decided to give it a try. I quickly realized that many of the obstacles existed only in my own mind. Studying went well, and I had underestimated myself for no reason.”
Alongside her work, Hilla completed both a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Financial and Human Resource Management and a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Industrial Management.
NEW DIRECTION FOR CAREER
The four-shift work model that had been introduced to support high production volumes eventually became challenging in the long term. Hilla decided to explore opportunities outside the company for a period while completing her studies.
When an opportunity for a daytime role became available, she returned to Valmet Automotive. Her studies opened the door to her current specialist position in operational quality.
The aspects of her work she enjoys most are meeting people, the variety of tasks, and the opportunity to influence how things are done.
“In my role, it is important to understand the realities of production, and both my previous work experience and my studies have been extremely valuable in that respect. During audits, I want to create an atmosphere of trust where people feel comfortable asking for support whenever they need it.”
Her work has taught her that expertise is built gradually. Evolving requirements, new information, and continuous learning ensure that her knowledge and skills continue to develop every day.
SUPPORT FOR PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
Hilla believes that moving from one role to another requires commitment and an understanding of how you learn best. She also thinks that uncertainty is something that can be managed with self-compassion.
“Impostor syndrome is a familiar feeling for many people, but I have found that the desire to learn is always stronger than the fear of failure. Accepting that you don’t need to have all the answers immediately has been an important part of my professional growth.”
According to Hilla, one of Valmet Automotive’s greatest strengths is its people. Over the years, they have built an environment that genuinely supports professional development and growth.
For anyone considering internal career opportunities, she has a clear piece of advice: Internal networking happens every day. Get to know people in different functions, be curious, be courageous, and trust yourself.
