The corporate climate action organization Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has officially approved the ambitious climate targets of the automotive service provider Valmet Automotive, reaffirming the company’s dedication to leading the way in sustainability and advancing toward a cleaner, greener future.

Valmet Automotive has already achieved remarkable success by reducing its environmental impact between 2019 and 2022, cutting emissions from its own operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 80%. Building on this success, Valmet Automotive has now set Science Based Targets to further drive its climate efforts.

Valmet Automotive’s SBTi validated near-term targets include a 90% emission reduction from the company’s own operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030, and a 25% emission reduction in the company’s value chain (Scope 3) by 2030, both from the 2022 baseline.

The SBTi approval ensures that Valmet Automotive’s climate targets align with the latest scientific recommendations and help limiting the global warming to 1.5°C, the critical threshold to avoid severe climate impacts.

  • Climate change is a serious challenge we all face, and we’re committed to do our part. With the validated SBTi targets, we are reinforcing our commitment to climate action and taking decisive steps to reduce emissions across our operations and value chain, says Pasi Rannus, CEO, Valmet Automotive.

IONCOR, a leading European provider of battery systems and currently owned 100% by Valmet Automotive, also plays an essential role in the company’s greenhouse gas emission reductions. Since 2022, IONCOR has reduced emissions in its own operations (Scope 1 and 2) by 45%, despite launching a new production plant and a production volume increase of 10% during this time.

The Science Based Targets Initiative is a partnership between CDP, the United Nations Global Compact, World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF). Science-based targets provide companies with a clearly defined path to reduce emissions in line with the Paris Agreement goals.
