The 100,000th Mercedes-Benz GLC rolled off the production line today at Valmet Automotive’s Uusikaupunki, Finland plant. The GLC has achieved the six digit volume faster than any other model manufactured by Valmet Automotive, with the production start in February 2017. The Mercedes-Benz Bremen plant in Germany is the main production site for the worldwide production of the GLC.
The GLC project has been the most challenging in Valmet Automotive’s history. It included engineering and constructing a body shop with more than 300 robots, investments of nearly 100 million euros, complete renewal of the production management system and recruitments of over 2,000 people in 2016 and 2017.
To meet the high demand for the GLC, Valmet Automotive targeted at the fastest possible production start. The manufacturing contract was signed in November 2015, and the series production started in February 2017. The GLC volumes were constantly ramped up and in 2017, Valmet Automotive produced a record number of cars – 90,000 GLC and A-Class vehicles.
